DDC Poonch finalises plan for rain water harvesting

POONCH: In view of prevailing drought like conditions and acute shortage of drinking water in the district especially in rural areas, the District Development Commissioner Mohammad Aijaz Asad discussed in detail the plan for tapping the rain water for optimum use.

During the meeting, the DDC directed the departments for comprehensive and organised efforts for concerted and sustained convergence among departments of Rural Development, Irrigation, Ground Water, Forests, IWMP, Soil Conservation, Agriculture and Horticulture for effective measures for enhanced water conservation and improvement in water harvesting. Directions were given for mapping of all water deficient areas in the district.

Detailed discussion was also held on requirement of hand pumps in various areas to augment drinking water supply.

Meanwhile forest department was asked to ascertain water requirement of habitation in higher reaches and plan community-based conservation driven interventions by providing such facilities in fringe areas.

The DDC said the objective of the rainwater harvesting plan is to ensure the (best) possible beneficial use of rainwater in rural and urban areas of the district. He stressed to involve multiple participants including government and private institutions and all citizens as stakeholders in the appropriate management of rainwater.

He further stressed to preserve and enhance surface water bodies in urban and rural areas, augment soil moisture for greenery, recharge ground water, mitigate floods and soil erosions, prevent salinity ingress and improve quality of groundwater besides providing environmental and ecological benefits to the area including fostering biodiversity.

The meeting was attended by ADDC Abdul Hamid, ACD Mukhtar Ahmad, ACR B A Lone, DPO, Divisional Forest Officer, DFO Social Forestry, ExEn PHE, JE Ground Water, Chief Agriculture Officer, PO IWMP and Block Development Officers.
